THE EUROPEANS
(LOS EUROPEOS)
2020, Filmax, 90 min, Spain, Dir: Víctor García León

This adaptation of the eponymous novel by the great Spanish satirist, Rafael Azcona, is set in the late 1950s during Spain’s dictatorship. The film follows Miguel (Raúl Arévalo), a provincial draftsman, and Antonio (Juan Diego Botto), the well-off son of an architect, as they escape the conservatism of the Spanish mainland for the sun-kissed shores of Ibiza, lured by the illusion of freedom and the promise of sexually liberated European women. The two young men join an eclectic community of bohemian vacationers and partygoers, but their stay on the bucolic island is not as carefree as they had planned. As Miguel begins to fall in love with the Parisian Odette (Stéphane Caillard), both must face moral and existential dilemmas. “Sharp, intelligent, comic, and tragic…” Begoña Piña, Elpublico.es. In Spanish with English subtitles.

About Recent Spanish Cinema

Since 1994, the Recent Spanish Cinema series (http://www.larecentspanishcinema.com/) has brought the biggest and best Spanish films to eager Los Angeles audiences, with the goal to expose them to Spanish culture, from art and music to food, fashion and more. Presented by the American Cinematheque, ICAA and EGEDA US, Recent Spanish Cinema has always showcased new talent on the rise, and over the years, the directors and actors spotlighted by the series read like a “who’s who” of the Spanish film industry.

Recent Cinema from Spain (http://miami.recentcinemafromspain.com/) was set up in Miami in 2011 as an initiative of EGEDA US aiming to provide a new outlet for the promotion of Spanish cinema on the East Coast, boosting its circulation to the public in general and the international audiovisual industry. It operates in partnership with The Olympia Theater in Miami.

This year, the Los Angeles and Miami Spanish film series join forces to co-host and present a combined special edition of Recent Spanish Cinema that is both a LOG-IN and DRIVE-IN event, tailored to fit the pandemic situation. This year’s annual series features virtual screenings, live Zoom panels with filmmakers, talent and industry leaders and drive-in screenings in each city.
