ABOUT THE SERIES The American Cinematheque is thrilled to welcome legendary filmmaker and pioneer of New German Cinema, Wim Wenders, in person for a 15-film retrospective that attempts the impossible: to capture the curiosity, profundity, and pure cinematic joy central to Wenders’ films. Self-described as incapable of cynicism, evidence of Wenders’ open-minded philosophy can be found in each one of his films, from the quietly soulful and iconically chronological The Road Trilogy, which confronts the landscape of the director’s native Germany in the 1970’s, to his newest film PERFECT DAYS, an ode to the mundane from the perspective of a bathroom attendant in Tokyo. It transcends genre, easily spottable in his documentaries like TOKYO-GA, a tribute to master auteur Yasujirō Ozu’s Tokyo, trope-smashing fantasies like the symphonic WINGS OF DESIRE, science-fiction epics like UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD, grounded interpersonal dramas like the classic PARIS, TEXAS, and numerous others. Join us as we motor down the endless scenic highway that is Wenders’ filmography.
