ABOUT THE SERIES:

The American Cinematheque is saddened by the loss of legendary American actor Gene Hackman and remembers him with an ongoing tribute highlighting many of his most unforgettable performances.

Hackman’s body of work consists of a variety of films that required of him many distinct performances, a task supported by his “everyman” persona. A staple in New Hollywood’s iconic crime films such as NIGHT MOVES, THE FRENCH CONNECTION, PRIME CUT, and BONNIE AND CLYDE, as much as for his renowned roles in many of the most memorable comedies of his time such as THE BIRDCAGE, THE HEARTBREAKERS, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN and THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS; Hackman has been a steady reason of why we go to the movies.

Much of his career has been defined by fruitful collaborations with singular auteurs such as Francis Ford Coppola for his breakout into fame, THE CONVERSATION, Clint Eastwood for the insightful deconstruction of the American Western, UNFORGIVEN, and his foray into cult films with Sam Raimi’s THE QUICK AND THE DEAD, among many other films that will remain tethered to the history of American cinema.
