November 6 – November 12, 2022 Luca Guadagnino: An American Cinematheque Tribute Series | Aero Theatre and Los Feliz 3
The American Cinematheque is proud to welcome celebrated auteur Luca Guadagnino in person at the Aero Theatre for this tribute series, featuring several of his acclaimed films, including an advance screening of his highly anticipated coming of age epic, BONES AND ALL. Born in Palermo, Italy, Luca Guadagnino is among the most distinguished filmmakers in the world. He made his feature debut in 1999 with THE PROTAGONISTS; star Tilda Swinton would also appear in the first two installments of Guadagnino’s “Desire” trilogy, I AM LOVE and A BIGGER SPLASH. The third installment of that series, CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, launched Timothée Chalamet’s career and earned a Best Adapted Screenplay Academy Award. Follow-up SUSPIRIA allowed Guadagnino to revisit a personal favorite and showed that the director was as adept at horror stories as he was with romances. BONES AND ALL combines the two styles – and much more. Set in the American mid-West in the 1980s, the film tracks two drifters, Maren (Taylor Russell) and Lee (Chalamet), who are linked by a hunger for flesh. “There is something about the disenfranchised, there is something about people living at the margins of society that I am drawn toward and touched by,” notes Guadagnino, who won Venice’s Silver Lion for Best Director for the new film. “All my movies are about outcasts, and the characters in BONES AND ALL resonated with me.”
