June 2 - June 3, 2024 Kenneth Lonergan: An American Cinematheque Tribute Series | MARGARET: EXTENDED CUT, MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
ABOUT THE SERIES: The American Cinematheque is proud to celebrate, as part of ‘Bleak Week: Cinema of Despair – Year 3,’ the universally acclaimed work of filmmaker/playwright/screenwriter extraordinaire, Kenneth Lonergan, with in-person conversations and screenings of his two most recent feature films: MARGARET: EXTENDED CUT and MANCHESTER BY THE SEA. Lonergan began his illustrious career as a playwright before pivoting to screenwriting. His first venture into feature-length directing was with his own screenplay, YOU CAN COUNT ON ME, which was executive produced by Martin Scorsese, who Lonergan first collaborated with on the screenplay for GANGS OF NEW YORK. MARGARET, Lonergan’s next foray into director/screenwriter double duty, has been hailed as one of the best films of the 21st century, ranking 31st on the BBC critics’ poll of the greatest films of the 2000s. Confronting themes of trauma, guilt, and despondency in a similar vein to its predecessor, MANCHESTER BY THE SEA has been the recipient of endless praise for its direction and writing, with Lonergan taking home the Best Original Screenplay Academy Award and BAFTA.
