November 27 - November 30, 2024 June Squibb: An American Cinematheque Retrospective Series | THE HUMANS, I’LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS, THELMA, NEBRASKA
ABOUT THE SERIES: The American Cinematheque is pleased to welcome beloved actor June Squibb in-person for a retrospective featuring a curated selection of some of her most renowned performances. There never was a time when Miss Squibb was not an actress. Her first Broadway appearance was in the original 1960 production of the musical Gypsy, and in 1990, Squibb made her film debut in ALICE, directed by Woody Allen – at the age of 61. This was followed by more films made in New York City, such as Martin Brest’s SCENT OF A WOMAN and Martin Scorsese’s AGE OF INNOCENCE. Squibb has enjoyed a prolific career since, highlighted by her breakthrough performance in Alexander Payne’s NEBRASKA, and her latest in Josh Margolin’s feature film debut, THELMA. Her career in the cinema has become defined by her roles in humanist films that explore the often complicated dynamics associated with families and friendships. THE HUMANS is a raw and riveting portrait of one family that peels away all the fears, insecurities and reservations held across three different generations, as they come face-to-face over the course of a single, vulnerable Thanksgiving dinner. Likewise, I’LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS explores the complex intersections between loss, love and loneliness, highlighting the vitality of individuality amid the realization that each of us require the presence of another. Squibb has enjoyed a prolific career collaborating with some of the most respected filmmakers of her generation, and playing opposite some of its greatest actors, thus becoming recognizable to an entire generation of moviegoers in just over three decades. In recent years, she has parlayed her fame by voicing characters in Pixar’s TOY STORY 4, SOUL and INSIDE OUT 2; her voice becoming just as much of a staple for a new generation of moviegoers.
