JANUARY 26 - DECEMBER 1, 2023 Jean-Luc Godard : L'influenceur Series | An American Cinematheque tribute to French New Wave pioneer Jean-Luc Godard exploring his most influential films
ABOUT THE SERIES A trailblazer. A rebel. A visionary. A film maverick. The ultimate influencer. When studying the history and language of cinema, Jean-Luc Godard is a household name. A quintessential artist who was deeply inspired by others, yet also advanced the art form with his own original techniques and formats, Godard’s career is a turning point for the film canon. Beginning his lifelong journey in film as a critic, he was immediately disgruntled with the state of the French film industry and Hollywood, calling for innovation in the art form. He and other French filmmakers in his circle, who also began as critics and enthusiasts, started to pick up 35mm cameras and make their own films on their own terms. Referencing past cinematic movements and influences while also fully embracing spontaneity, the French New Wave was born. Soon, many other iconic filmmakers and movements would become influenced by Godard’s innovation. The American Cinematheque is proud to pay tribute and say “au revoir!” to one of the greatest cinematic masters of our time. Through his enduring experimentation with continuity, sound, camera work, acting, locations, and much more, Godard transformed motion pictures permanently. Juxtaposing his great classics with others that are inspired by and take on his distinctive style, we aim to showcase and trace his inimitable influence throughout time. Please enjoy our selection of his twelve most influential films and those that continued the cinematic dialogue after.
