ABOUT THE SERIES: The American Cinematheque is honored to pay tribute to three-time Academy Award-winner and eighteen-time Emmy Award-winner, James L. Brooks. A triple threat – Brooks has written, produced, and directed legions of beloved films that have gone on to define the canon of American classics. With a career stretching across seven decades, it is impossible to examine the contemporary zeitgeist without acknowledging Brooks role in its construction. Succeeding his television hits like TAXI, THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, and THE SIMPSONS, Brooks transitioned to film in 1979 after writing the screenplay for STARTING OVER which he co-produced with Alan J. Pakula. In 1983, Brooks finally added the role of director to his repertoire with TERMS OF ENDEARMENT for which he won three Academy Awards. Later, he wrote, produced, and directed BROADCAST NEWS, which was nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Screenplay and Best Picture. He also co-wrote and produced the 1980s classic BIG and the legendary SIMPSONS MOVIE, based on the Fox hit. In addition to producing and directing a number of era-defining films, Brooks has been Kelly Fremon Craig’s mentor since 2011, producing her debut feature EDGE OF SEVENTEEN followed by her latest film ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT’S ME, MARGARET. We are thrilled to welcome the brilliant James L. Brooks to the Aero Theatre for a career-spanning conversation.
