October 5 - October 7, 2024 Guy Maddin: An American Cinematheque Retrospective Series | RUMOURS, THE GREEN FOG, “The Heart of the World,” THE SADDEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD, BRAND UPON THE BRAIN!, “Bring Me the Head of Tim Horton,” MY WINNIPEG, THE FORBIDDEN ROOM
ABOUT THE SERIES: The American Cinematheque is thrilled to welcome esteemed Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin in-person for a retrospective celebrating his career, including a presentation of his newest film, RUMOURS, co-directed by Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson, as part of Beyond Fest 2024. Throughout his illustrious career, Guy Maddin has enjoyed many fruitful collaborations with like minded artists, such as with filmmakers Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson, who in addition to serving as co-director for RUMOURS, also co-directed THE GREEN FOG; and with Isabella Rossellini, who stars in THE SADDEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD and BRAND UPON THE BRAIN! In perhaps the culminating work of Maddin’s career, and undoubtedly his most personal film, MY WINNIPEG, it is his hometown of Winnipeg, Canada that serves as his chief collaborator and the lively protagonist of the genre-bending docufiction. An understated layer of Maddin’s oeuvre are his singularly strange and unforgetful short films, in which he pushes the boundaries of the medium even further, experimenting with the various elements that make the moving image so elusive and curiously beautiful. Two of his most noteworthy shorts, “The Heart of the World” and “Bring Me the Head of Tim Horton,” each of which display various aspects of Maddin’s cinematic genius, screen as a part of this retrospective.
