January 19 – February 3, 2024 Edward Yang: An American Cinematheque Retrospective Series | A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY, A CONFUCIAN CONFUSION, TAIPEI STORY, MAHJONG, YI YI, THE TERRORIZERS, THAT DAY, ON THE BEACH Aero Theatre and Egyptian Theatre
ABOUT THE SERIES: The American Cinematheque is honored to pay tribute to filmmaker Edward Yang, a pioneer of the Taiwanese New Wave, whose films employ a realist visual style, unconventional narrative structures, and nonprofessional actors to create an intimate and grounded reflection of society in Taiwan. Our retrospective includes the West Coast premieres of the 4K restorations of A CONFUCIAN CONFUSION and MAHJONG, along with his celebrated classics – from his sprawling 1994 epic A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY; his mournful anatomy of Taiwan in TAIPEI STORY and the anthological IN OUR TIME; to the multigenerational family drama YI YI, for which Yang received the Best Director Award at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival.
