ABOUT THE FILM A young Texan (Laurence Harvey) leaves his depression-ravaged town for New Orleans in search of his lost love (Capucine) in this simmering adaptation of the Nelson Algren novel. Jane Fonda, Barbara Stanwyck and Anne Baxter lead a top-notch supporting cast. The film also boasts an Oscar-nominated title song (by Elmer Bernstein and Mack David), as well as one of Saul Bass’ most distinctive credit sequences, following a black cat as it prowls the French Quarter. FORMAT: 35mm DISTRIBUTOR: Sony Repertory ABOUT THE HOST Born in Normandy, France, Philippe Garnier was California cultural correspondent for the French daily newspaper Libération for 29 years. Among his eight books in French, his 1989 biography of pulp writer David Goodis was published in the U.S. in 2013, and in June 2020, Eddie Muller’s Black Pool Productions brought out Scoundrels and Spitballers, Garnier’s wry take on ’30s and ’40s Hollywood writers (available at blackpooolproductions.com).
