ABOUT THE FILMS THE JERK, 1979, Universal, 94 min, Dir: Carl Reiner Steve Martin makes his starring role film debut in what became the first of many wildly successful collaborations with celebrated filmmaker Carl Reiner. Martin plays the lovable, yet hilariously naïve Navin R. Johnson, who leaves his adoptive black family behind to see the world. Bernadette Peters sings, dances, throws knives and plays the trumpet while M. Emmet Walsh shoots and curses his way into film history in this uproariously funny adventure. Format: 35mm THE GREAT MCGINTY, 1940, Universal, 82 min, USA, Dir: Preston Sturges Writer Preston Sturges famously offered the script of this classic comedy to his studio for $1 – with the proviso that he be attached to direct. This potent satire about the rise of Dan McGinty (Brian Donlevy) under the tutelage of a corrupt political boss (Akim Tamiroff) earned Sturges an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and jumpstarted the most celebrated span in Sturges’ career in the early 1940s, which solidified his status as one of the greatest directors of comedy.
