Near the end of World War II, eleven-year-old Mahito loses his mother in a tragic fire in Tokyo. He moves to the countryside where a peculiar gray heron lives on his family’s estate in a mysterious tower. When Mahito’s new stepmother disappears, he follows the gray heron into the tower, and enters a fantastic world shared by the living and the dead.
