ABOUT THE FILM: Following the suicide of a corrupt cop, Police Sergeant Dave Bannion (Glenn Ford) opens an investigation that he soon learns no one wants. Ignoring warnings to drop the case, Bannion hears that the dead cop’s girlfriend, Lucy, has a suicide note detailing a web of corruption centered on mob boss Mike Lagana and his sadistic henchman Vince Stone (Lee Marvin). After Lucy turns up dead and Bannion loses his own wife in a car bombing that was meant for him, he resigns from the force to continue the investigation. And when her romantic interest in Bannion leads Vince’s girlfriend, Debby Marsh (Gloria Grahame), into trouble, she threatens to blow the lid off Lagana’s operation, laying the groundwork for a violent showdown with Vince.
