Daniel Hirsh (Peter Finch), a Jewish doctor, and Alex Greville (Glenda Jackson), a woman increasingly disillusioned with her life, are both involved in a love triangle with a young sculptor (Murray Head) despite knowing each other through common acquaintances. When their shared lover moves away, they have to come to terms with the reality of their situation.
