ABOUT THE FILM:

In Portuguese with English subtitles.

A taxi driver wins the lottery. As a rich man, however, he becomes disconnected from the world and suffers a series of embarrassing situations.

In 1957, Roberto Farias wrote the script with his brother Riva, prepared the production and directed his first feature film, the comedy Rico ri à toa, shot at the Flama Filmes studios in the Laranjeiras neighborhood, with Zé Trindade, Violeta Ferraz, Silvinha Chiozzo and Zezé Macedo in the cast. Budgeted at one million cruzeiros, the film was made thanks to a loan his father took out from a loan shark for 200,000 cruzeiros, the same value as the family’s house in Friburgo, to be paid back in 120 days. The film also had the support of producer Murilo Seabra, son of actress Carmen Santos, as well as Cláudio Castilho and Og Araújo. In 120 days the film was made, released and paid for. An audience success, it caused huge queues at the Cine Roxy in Copacabana during its release in September 1957.

Restored in 2010 by the Centro de Pesquisadores do Cinema Brasileiro and digitized in 4k in 2018 for the Remaster Festival, Classics of Brazilian Cinema.
