ABOUT THE EVENT:

The American Cinematheque is thrilled to welcome in filmmaker Sean Wang and producer Sam Davis in celebration of their Oscar-nominated documentary short film, “Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó.” Join us for a special evening where we will screen the short film, and have a conversation with Sean and Sam. They will then introduce a favorite feature film, Lulu Wang’s THE FAREWELL.

Sean Wang visits his maternal and paternal grandmothers who live as roommates during the pandemic. The resulting, roving portrait of Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó’s lives together and their shared love for him is hilarious, moving, and full of the hard-won wisdom of later years.

In this funny, uplifting tale based on an actual lie, Chinese-born, U.S.-raised Billi (Awkwafina) reluctantly returns to Changchun to find that, although the whole family knows their beloved matriarch, Nai-Nai, has been given mere weeks to live, everyone has decided not to tell Nai Nai herself.
