L.A. Premiere!
‘Michael Almereyda: An American Cinematheque Retrospective’

- 84 MINUTES
- DIRECTED BY: Michael Almereyda
ABOUT THE FILMS:
Five short films by Michael Almereyda: “A Hero of Our Time” (1987), “The Rocking Horse Winner” (1997), “The Great Gatsby in Five Minutes” (2011), “To the Unknown” (2017) and “The North Wind’s Gift” (2018).
Featuring Dennis Hopper in a performance the actor fit around the shooting of BLUE VELVET, “A Hero of Our Time” is Almereyda’s first film — a self-financed L.A. noir, 35mm, black-and-white, 23-minutes long. It’s loosely based on a chapter in Mikhail Lermontov’s 1839 novel of the same name. The other shorts in the program also emerged from literary sources, works by D.H. Lawrence, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Kenneth Koch, Italo Calvino — all transplanted to contemporary Los Angeles and surrounding territory. They have shown in international film festivals, but never screened publicly in L.A.
