ABOUT THE FILM Inspired by the Buster Keaton classic Our Hospitality, S.S. Rajamouli’s MARYADA RAMANNA is probably his most charming and endearing work. Ramu (Sunil) returns to his ancestral home to take possession of land left behind after his father’s passing, while there he falls in love with the beautiful Solani (Aparna). Unbeknownst to either of them, their families have been feuding for decades and Solani’s father Ramineedu (Nagineedu) vows to murder Ramu to avenge the murder of his brother. There’s only one catch, Ramineedu’s code of honor dictates that he cannot kill a man who is a guest in his home, and so the game to get Ramu to step outside of the compound begins. Partially narrated by a sarcastic talking bicycle and filled with gut-busting antics and boisterous catchy songs, MARYADA RAMANNA somehow manages to outcharm its antecedent and add a rural South Indian flair. Criminally underappreciated in Rajamouli’s oeuvre, this is a screening not to miss.
