ABOUT THE FILMS IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES, 1976, Janus Films, 102 min, France/Japan, Dir: Nagisa Ōshima. Still censored in its own country, IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES (Ai no corrida), by Japanese director Nagisa Ōshima, remains one of the most controversial films of all time. A graphic portrayal of insatiable sexual desire, Ōshima’s film, set in 1936 and based on a true incident, depicts a man and a woman (Tatsuya Fuji and Eiko Matsuda) consumed by a transcendent, destructive love while living in an era of ever escalating imperialism and governmental control. Less a work of pornography than of politics, the films is a brave, taboo-breaking milestone. FORMAT: 35mm MAX, MON AMOUR, 1986, Rialto Pictures, 92 min, France, Dir: Nagisa Ōshima. Nagisa Ōshima’s delightfully absurd comedy of manners stars Charlotte Rampling as the wife of an English diplomat (Anthony Higgins), who embarks on a passionate affair with an unexpected new lover, a circus chimpanzee named Max. Co-written by frequent Luis Buñuel collaborator, Jean-Claude Carrière, MAX, MON AMOUR is a hilarious skewering of bourgeois society delivered in a surprisingly deadpan style. FORMAT: 35mm
