Gene Hackman is a high school basketball coach in 1950s Indiana whose methods – and his choice of the alcoholic Shooter (Dennis Hopper) as assistant coach – are second-guessed by nearly everyone in town. But his belief that teamwork is more important than star players eventually brings the school to the state championships.
