On a dark, wet night a historic and regal Chinese cinema, like the Royal Theater in THE LAST PICTURE SHOW and the title movie house in CINEMA PARADISO, sees its final film. Together with a small handful of souls they bid “Goodbye, Dragon Inn.” With Tsai Ming-liang’s signature minimalist approach, featuring long, static shots and sparse use of dialogue, GOODBYE, DRAGON INN emerges not as a simple nostalgic love letter to the age of pre-VOD cinephilia, but a deeply complex narrative in which the past and present commingle harmoniously and poignantly.
