Scandalous in its time, still steamy today: Tennessee Williams’ ribald tale of child bride “Baby Doll” Meighan (Carroll Baker) and the men who lust after her. When cotton gin owner Archie Lee Meighan (Karl Malden) destroys rival Silva Vacarro’s (Eli Wallach) cotton gin, a battle for dominance ensues, with Baby Doll stuck in the middle. Elia Kazan’s shot-on-location adaptation of Williams’ one-act play uncovers a web of gender, class, and racial prejudices marinating in the Mississippi heat.
