ABOUT THE FILMS:

ARMORED CAR ROBBERY, Dir. Richard Fleischer, 67 Min, Warner Bros., USA

Originally released June 8, 1950

The ultimate B heist film, it established the cinematic template that would be appropriated by subsequent caper flicks. Terse dialogue by Earl Felton and no-frills direction by Dick Fleischer, who flawlessly blended period L.A. locations with Pathé interiors during a tidy 18-day production schedule. The gruffest mug in noir, Charles McGraw, plays a relentless L.A. police lieutenant matched against lizard-lidded heavy William Talman, in the film noir equivalent of KING KONG VS. GODZILLA.

FORMAT: 35mm

ASSAULT ON THE PAY TRAIN, Dir. Roberto Farias, 102 Min, R F Farias Productions, Brazil

Originally released June 28, 1962

In Portuguese with English subtitles.

This fact-based retelling of one of Brazil’s most notorious heists is rich in characterization and reveals in the underbelly of Rio De Janeiro the dearth of basic rights for people living in the favelas. A gang of small-time thieves from the slums, led by Tiao Medonho (Eliezer Gomes), carries out the clock-work robbery of a train loaded with money belonging to the Bank of Brazil. The thieves have promised to spend only a fraction of the take, a commitment that quickly starts falling apart. A socially-conscious thriller, expertly directed by Farias.
