In an alternate version of Taiwan, a pandemic is raging, ignored by the government. The infected lose control and start to act out—anything and everything in their impulses. Ultra-violence and gore mingle with uncontrolled sexual urges, plunging the country into a visceral nightmare from which it seems there’s no escape. In the midst of this carnage is a young couple, on opposite sides of the city, trying to reconnect. It will be brutal.
Unspeakably violent, incredibly confrontational, and utterly transgressive, THE SADNESS is genre cinema at its most extreme—pushed beyond the limit. Shocking set-pieces build on top of one another an escalating sense of inescapable barbarity that traps the viewer into the same nightmare as its protagonists, whilst acting as a wry state-of-the-nation observation.
