About the Film

2021, Samuel Goldwyn Films, 117 min, Denmark, Dir: Thomas Vinterberg

Four friends, all teachers at various stages of middle age, are stuck in a rut. Unable to share their passions either at school or at home, they embark on an audacious experiment from an obscure philosopher: to see if a constant level of alcohol in their blood will help them find greater freedom and happiness. At first they each experience a new-found zest, but as the gang pushes their experiment further, issues that have been simmering for years come to a head and the men are faced with a choice: reckon with their behavior or continue on the same course.

Underscored by delicate and affecting camerawork, director Thomas Vinterberg’s spry script, co-written with regular collaborator Tobias Lindholm, uses this bold premise to explore the euphoria and pain of an unbridled life. Playing a once brilliant but now world-weary shell of a man, the ever-surprising Mads Mikkelsen delivers a fierce and touching performance. In Danish and Swedish with English subtitles.

About the Golden Globe Foreign-Language Series

Discover the best of contemporary world cinema during our week of special screenings of the Golden Globe Best Foreign-Language Film nominees at the American Cinematheque! This year we are pleased to bring the series online with virtual Member screenings of the nominated films and a Zoom panel discussion with the filmmakers.

Filippo Meneghetti’s TWO OF US follows two retired women (Barbara Sukowa and Martine Chevallier) who have shared a secret love for decades. In Jayro Bustamante’s politically charged horror tale LA LLORONA, a retired general is haunted – literally – by his genocidal crimes. Holocaust survivor Sophia Loren forms an unlikely friendship with a bitter street kid in Edoardo Ponti’s THE LIFE AHEAD. Mads Mikkelsen stars in Thomas Vinterberg’s ANOTHER ROUND as part of a group of teachers who take a drinking experiment too far. In Lee Isaac Chung’s 1980s-set drama MINARI, a Korean family tries to make a new start on an Arkansas farm.
