One of cinema’s most impressive filmmaking duos, Joe and Anthony Russo have spent their careers championing the collaborative nature of the artform and assembling creative teams that push the boundaries of cinematic scope and form. With their debut feature, classic crime comedy WELCOME TO COLLINWOOD (2002), the Brothers showcased their natural talent for directing impressive ensembles; likewise, their subsequent work in television on ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT (for which they won an Emmy for Outstanding Directing of a Comedy Series), COMMUNITY and HAPPY ENDINGS demonstrated their ability to create artful, yet massively popular, entertainment. Over the last seven years, the Russo Brothers have become household names by redefining what a blockbuster could be through their groundbreaking contributions to the Marvel cinematic universe, permanently raising the bar in terms of scope and box office: CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (2014), CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR (2016), AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR (2018) and AVENGERS: ENDGAME (2019), the latter of which holds the record for highest-grossing film of all time.
Similarly, the Russo Brothers are committed to helping storytellers – both established and new – thrive and gain a foothold in the film industry. In early 2018, they announced the formation of their studio, AGBO, through which they have produced a number of successful films including Brian Kirk’s crime drama 21 BRIDGES, starring Chadwick Boseman, Sam Hargrave’s streaming-record-breaking thriller EXTRACTION and Natalie Erika James’ critically acclaimed horror thriller RELIC, starring Emily Mortimer. Most recently, the Russo Brothers have produced and directed the highly anticipated CHERRY, a crime drama based on the best-selling novel, starring Tom Holland and Ciara Bravo. CHERRY will be released as an Apple Original Film on Apple TV+ on March 12, 2021.
This month, we pay tribute to the Russo Brothers’ influential work and invite you to watch their debut feature WELCOME TO COLLINWOOD and their newly executive produced film RELIC, as well as a special advance screening of CHERRY, as part of our AC Spotlight: APPLE ORIGINAL FILMS.
