ABOUT THE FILM: In Hungarian with English subtitles. Béla Tarr’s stunning debut, made when he was just 22 years old, follows Irén, who lives with her daughter in a small apartment of her in-laws, in the center of Budapest. Her husband Laci just came back from his national service and his relationship with Irén is deteriorating. Soon, the young woman wants to leave the family, but her rehousing request gets stuck into the communist administration. Using non-professional actors and a documentary-like style, Tarr delivers a fascinating portrait of a family under pressure. The 4K digital restoration using the the original image negatives and original magnetic tape sounds were carried out by the National Film Institute Hungary- Film Archive and Film Lab in 2019, in the frame of the “Long-term restoration programme of the Hungarian film heritage”.
