The American Cinematheque and the African-American Critics Association are proud to present a special panel in celebration of Juneteenth. Join us for “Black Identity Through Media: TV Today,” a panel conversation featuring Charles Murray, Carl Seaton, and Erica Watson, moderated by AAFCA president Gil Robertson. The conversation will explore the diversity of Black identity in television and how the panelists’ works has changed throughout time in the TV landscape, and in relation to their own personal identities.

ABOUT THE FILM: 

Former beauty queen and single mom Turquoise (Nicole Beharie) prepares her rebellious teenage daughter Kai (Alexis Chikaeze) for the “Miss Juneteenth” pageant taking place in their Texas suburb. The competition takes mother and daughter on a journey through old triumphs and wounds, with both women realizing their true calling in the process.
