ABOUT THE SERIES: Greetings, Cinema-Goers! We have assembled a team of marvelous movie characters throughout cinema history, from short films to 7 hour epics, to defend the big screens of Los Angeles, its proper masking, grateful audiences, and the unsung union projectionists who know, “with great presentation, there must also come… great responsibility.” The Cinematheque Avengers Initiative was designed to defend the theatrical experience from threats beyond the capabilities of the conventional cinema experience. Members of the team include: Natasha (Rostova) as the agent of passion in a Napoleonic love triangle in WAR AND PEACE. Black Panthers from the Oakland chapter as they fight the unjust imprisonment of activist and cofounder Huey P. Newton in Agnes Varda’s striking short, “Black Panthers.” Captain America, Peter Fonda, as he takes on the open road as a counterculture super soldier in EASY RIDER. The amazing Spider-Cleg Ralph Fiennes as he overcomes a traumatic event early in his life in SPIDER. Ironman, in full invincible iron body horror perversion with TETSUO: THE IRON MAN. Hawkeye, as the adopted Mohawk marksman battling colonial politics in one of America’s earliest tales of suspense: THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS. The Falcon, as he and his avian sidekick become double government agents in THE FALCON AND THE SNOWMAN. The Wasp in Andrea Arnold’s wonderous “Wasp,” as a woman struggles to keep her hive intact. The astonishing “Ant” Sylvie in HOUSEKEEPING as she offers two abandoned sisters a chance for real love, home and a sense of family. Thor as he journeys into mystery sailing from South America to the South Pacific in KON-TIKI. WANDA as a mother stranded on the margins of society in Barbara Loden’s groundbreaking cinematic vision. And finally, the incredible green radioactive monster who started it all, GODZILLA, as the poignant embodiment of an entire population’s fears.
