The American Cinematheque is proud to welcome acclaimed filmmaker Santiago Mitre in-person for the first complete retrospective in the U.S. including the the Academy Award nominee for Best International Feature Film, ARGENTINA, 1985 and THE STUDENT, PAULINA, 15 WAYS TO KILL YOUR NEIGHBOR, and THE SUMMIT. Born in Buenos Aires, filmmaker Santiago Mitre initially started out as an actor and graduated from the Universidad del Cine, directing shorts and promotional films. in 2008 he became a writer on films for Pablo Trapero, Israel Adrian and Walter Salles. His feature film debut followed in 2011 with THE STUDENT (EL ESTUDIANTE) and the founding of his independent production company La Union de Los Rios. 2015 brought the premiere of his second feature, PAULINA (LA PATOTA), at the Semaine de la critique at Cannes and marked the beginning of his collaboration with producer Axel Kuschevatzky. Premiering in 2017 in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, Mitre’s Political thriller THE SUMMIT (LA CORDILLERA), became one of highest selling movies in Argentina that year. Following the success, Mitre filmed 15 WAYS TO KILL YOUR NEIGHBOR (PETIT FLEUR), his first production in France. Mitre and Kuschevatsky returned with ARGENTINA, 1985 to tell one of the most important stories of Argentina. The film won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and is nominated for Best International Feature at the Academy Awards.
