December 21 - December 30, 2022 Irene Cara Remembered: Celebrating Her Classics Series | FAME, FLASHDANCE, & SPARKLE
The American Cinematheque celebrates the life, career, and legacy of Irene Cara Escalera, famed American singer, songwriter, and actress. Rising to prominence after playing the role of Coco Hernandez in the 1980 musical film FAME, Irene made her mark on the stage, in the studio, and onscreen with timeless R&B, pop, and disco hits. At age 16, Cara played the role of Sparkle in the 1976 film SPARKLE, which was inspired by the story of the Supremes. She dazzled audiences and became a breakout star after the film. Cara became an Academy Award nominated artist due to the 1980 hit film FAME. According to the New York Times, “she was originally cast as a dancer, but when producers David Da Silva and Alan Marshall and screenwriter Christopher Gore heard her voice, they re-wrote the role of Coco Hernandez for her to play.” Being a part of the film FLASHDANCE was a highlight of Cara’s career. She co-wrote the title song “Flashdance… What a Feeling” with Giorgio Moroder and Keith Forsey, penning the lyrics in a car riding around New York City. Join us at screenings paying tribute to a timeless pop sensation.
