January 7, 2023 Todd Field: An American Cinematheque Retrospective Series | TÁR, LITTLE CHILDREN, IN THE BEDROOM
The American Cinematheque is proud to welcome three-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker Todd Field in person at the Aero Theatre for a career retrospective to celebrate his first two features, IN THE BEDROOM & LITTLE CHILDREN, along with his latest, TÁR, the most critically acclaimed film of the year. Honored as Best Picture of the Year by both the New York Film Critics Circle and Los Angeles Film Critics Association, TÁR was selected as one of AFI’s Best Films of the Year. TÁR dominated IndieWire’s 2022 Critic’s Poll of 165 critics from around the world, and topped all major categories; Best Film, Best Director, Best Performance, and Best Screenplay. To date Field has won Best Director and Screenplay from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, Best Director from The Boston Society of Film Critics, a Gotham Award for Best Screenplay, and TÁR has been nominated for seven Critics Choice Awards, seven Independent Spirit Awards, and three Golden Globes. From three-time Academy-Award nominated filmmaker Todd Field comes TÁR, starring Cate Blanchett as Lydia Tár, the groundbreaking conductor of a major German Orchestra. We meet Tár at the height of her career, as she’s preparing both a book launch and much-anticipated live performance of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony. Over the ensuing weeks her life begins to unravel in a singularly modern way. The result is a searing examination of power, and its impact and durability in today’s society.
