ABOUT THE FILM Paul Harris is young, rich and utterly full of contempt for the world he occupies – and when an unfortunate insult earns him a bloody beating at the hands of two violent men, he develops a new obsession: to train and learn to fight. Meanwhile Rob Tully, a working class kid from the wrong side of the tracks, tries to find his way to a better world through his skill at fighting – his family, all fighters themselves, train Rob, hoping for a great future. Somewhere down the line these young men will clash – and for one to achieve his dream, the other has to fail. Andrew Hunt’s feature film is an insightful examination of the true cost and meaning of masculinity without ever resorting to cliches – exploring these two characters with a sensitive eye, he draws out emotion and meaning from the smallest of circumstances – however this is not to say the fights are anything but meek – throughout the film the bare knuckle brawls feel truly brutal with every punch and hit being felt reverberate through the very fabric of the screen itself. Also featuring a splendid performance by Michael Ironside, THE FIGHT MACHINE is a true lo-key discovery, a character lead, exceptionally written, exceptionally acted and utterly effective in its examination of a world where violence is sometimes the cause and sometime the answer to the problems.
