ABOUT THE FILMS: “The Idle Class,” 1921, Dir. Charlie Chaplin, 32 Min, Janus Films, USA Charlie is the spitting image of a rich woman’s drunk husband. At a masked ball, her inability to distinguish one from the other leads to much confusion. FORMAT: 35mm LE GRAND AMOUR, 1969, Dir. Pierre Étaix, 87 Min, Janus Films, France In French with English subtitles. Despite having a loving and patient wife at home, a good-natured suit-and-tie man, played by writer-director Pierre Étaix, finds himself hopelessly attracted to his gorgeous new secretary in this gently satirical tale of temptation. From this simple, standard premise, Étaix weaves a constantly surprising web of complexly conceived jokes. LE GRAND AMOUR is a cutting, nearly Buñuelian takedown of the bourgeoisie that somehow doesn’t have a mean bone in its body. FORMAT: 35mm
