GO BIG OR STAY HOME: 70MM FAVORITES AT THE AERO From Super Technirama 70 to Ultra Panavision to Dimension 150 and more, the 70mm large-screen format has always promised—and delivered—an exhilarating and immersive experience at the cinema with widescreen presentations and 6 track sounds. The Golden Age of 70mm filmmaking from 1955 to 1970 brought us nearly 60 Hollywood features, among them such masterpieces as VERTIGO, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. The AC has struck new prints of the latter two films exclusively for our audiences. In addition to films shot in large-format, many were released in the 1980s in special engagements as 70mm blow-ups, which offered sound and image quality superior to the original 35mm prints and enhanced the spectacle of the filmmakers’ visions, as in Steven Spielberg’s E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL. Since then, 70mm filmmaking never really went away – Spike Lee put it to impressive use in 1992’s MALCOLM X. In recent years, a new generation has embraced large-format presentations. Patty Jenkins’ blockbuster action-adventure WONDER WOMAN and Paul Thomas Anderson’s ambitious period dramas (including THE MASTER, PHANTOM THREAD and INHERENT VICE) have all stretched the boundaries of the medium using 70mm’s epic canvas. Finally, film champion Christopher Nolan’s TENET can be seen and heard the way it was intended, in glorious 70mm.
