May 5 – THE HAWK IS DYING – Only Los Angeles Theatrical Screening! [Spielberg Theatre]

Director Julian Goldberger (TRANS) adapts the famous novel by Harry Crews (A Feast of Snakes; Scar Lover) into a stunning examination of Florida auto upholsterer George (Paul Giamatti), a middle-aged man on the verge of a midlife crisis. Things are brought to a head by George’s frustrating efforts to tame a wild hawk as well as an out-of-left-field family tragedy, for which he feels partly responsible. Once George goes over the edge, he puts on his falconry glove and keeps the bird literally chained to his arm until he and it come to a meeting of minds. A rigorously intense personal journey into the meaning of one man’s life, Giamatti gives perhaps his best performance ever, one that should have received a slew of awards. A mesmerizing and bewilderingly underrated little masterpiece that deserves to be seen. With exceptional support from Michelle Williams, Michael Pitt and Rusty Schwimmer. This is the film’s only Los Angeles theatrical screening before being released on DVD later in May, and it is your one chance to see it on the big screen. "…one seriously wild and deeply wounded effort from writer-director Julian Goldberger…it may require a leap of faith to succumb to Goldberger's spell. But I leapt, and found it enthralling…" – Nathan Lee, The Village Voice Discussion following with director Julian Goldberger.

June 8 – 14: Guy Maddin’s Newest: BRAND UPON THE BRAIN!

Live Cinema Spectacular June 8 – 10. June 11 – 14 the film will be presented with a pre-recorded soundtrack featuring Isabella Rossellini as the narrator. The latest Cinema Spectacular, BRAND UPON THE BRAIN! from director Guy Maddin (THE SADDEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD, TWILIGHT OF THE ICE NYMPHS). In an unprecedented act of faith in the enduring power of the theatrical experience, BRAND UPON THE BRAIN! is being presented as an expansive live event in select cities, featuring an 11-piece "live" orchestra, a 5-person "Live" Foley (sound effects performed onstage) team, and a "live" celebrity narrator, and Castrato supplementing the filmic image, to comprise a one-of-a-kind cinematic spectacle. Filmmaker Guy Maddin is appearing In-Person to present the film during these exclusive live engagements in select historic movie palaces in Chicago (The Music Box), New York (The Village East) and Los Angeles (The Egyptian Theatre). Following presentations of this unique stage production, the feature film BRAND UPON THE BRAIN! will continue in those cities as a regular film run (with a pre-recorded soundtrack including narration by Isabella Rossellini). Featuring an original score by Jason Staczek, BRAND! has been earning unqualified raves during nine months on the festival circuit, including Festival-best mentions at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival, 2006 New York Film Festival, and the 2007 Berlinale. BRAND UPON THE BRAIN!, Maddin's first production filmed outside of his native Winnipeg, was produced by The Film Company, a unique, Seattle-based independent film studio founded in 2004 by filmmaker Gregg Lachow (who directed/produced his own modern day "silent" film with live components, SILENCE! in 2001). BRAND UPON THE BRAIN! world premiered at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival. It has since been performed with live accompaniment at the 2006 New York Film Festival, the 2007 Berlin International Film Festival, the 2007 Mexico City Film Festival, and the 2007 Buenos Aires Film Festival. Surreal, satiric and surprisingly touching, Maddin's film looks at the secret lives of families in a work that is equal parts childhood reminiscence, Expressionist horror movie, teen detective serial and Grand Guignol reverie. Guy Maddin's latest delirious creation is a silent film like none you have ever seen before."One of the year's 10 best films." -- Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

June 18: Premiere Screening of DAVID AXELROD LIVE AT THE ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL – Presented in association with Mochilla & Dublab

"Axelrod speaks with the same musical vocabulary as Burt Bacharach and Ennio Morricone, his art is dreamt in deeper atmospheric shades and, significantly, pays far greater attention to the rhythm section."

The LA Weekly

David Axelrod is an LA native and a legend. His jazz filled with taught strings and sparse often dissonant arrangements have become the raw material of todays hiphop. As a house producer at Capital Records in the sixties he produced many hits for Cannonball Adderley, Lou Rawls and David McCallum. As a solo artist his William Blake inspired trilogy Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience and Earth Rot inspired many from George Lucas to Allen Ginsberg to Rza. DJ Shadow and Lauryn Hill have used his arrangements. Dr. Dre’s biggest hit of the late 90s Next Episode was sampled from his work. The Royal Festival Hall is one of Britain's most remarkable modernist architectural triumphs as such it was a perfect place for David Axelrod to play his debut concert in the UK. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the sold out crowd. Most of his music recorded in the studios in Los Angeles, had never been played live. The Orchestra rose to the occasion. Defiantly Axelrod smiled and took the applause. Before the night was through, internet message boards bubbled over with no end of the superlatives to describe what had occurred. Backstage it had been for Axelrod "One hell of a show!" Discussion following with David Axelrod and filmmaker Dana Axelrod. Tribute set by JRocc of the World Famous Beatjunkies in the courtyard will follow the screening

June 22 – June 24, 2007: Encore Weekend of Crispin Glover’s WHAT IS IT?

Veteran actor Crispin Hellion Glover, who has appeared in over 30 films as an actor, including RIVER'S EDGE, CHARLIE'S ANGELS, THE DOORS, WILLARD, DEAD MAN, BACK TO THE FUTURE, WHAT'S EATING GLIBERT GRAPE, WILD AT HEART, THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT the upcoming BEOWULF and THE WIZARD OF GORE brings his debut feature film as a director, WHAT IS IT? back to the Egyptian Theatre for another exclusive 3-day Los Angeles engagement. Known for creating many memorable, incredibly quirky characters onscreen as an actor, Glover's first effort as a director will not disappoint fans of his offbeat sensibilities and eccentric taste. Featuring a cast largely comprised of actors with Downs Syndrome, the film is not about Downs Syndrome. Glover describes it as "Being the adventures of a young man whose principal interests are snails, salt, a pipe and how to get home, as tormented by an hubristic racist inner psyche." In addition to writing and directing WHAT IS IT?, Glover also appears in the film as an actor in the role of "Dueling Demi-God Auteur and The young man's inner psyche." Fairuza Balk voices one of the snails. The soundtrack makes use of Wagner and Bartok excerpts to ironic effect, as well as tracks by late Church of Satan high priest Anton LaVey, Charles Manson and a country track by Klassic Klan recording artist Johnny Rebel. "Scenes with naked women in elephant masks, Shirley Temple, Glover being lowered deus-ex-machina style into a Maxfield Parrish scene...It's like Fellini on psychedelics -- wildly creative but completely twisted." -- Jane Ganahl, San Francisco Examiner ; "Possibly the darkest, most bizarre and highly demented film I've ever seen." - J. Hoberman, Village Voice. WHAT IS IT? is part one of a trilogy. Part two, IT IS FINE EVERYTHING IS FINE...! premiered at the Sundance Film Festival (and will be screening at The Egyptian in December of this year!). Preceding the film is an hour-long live dramatic presentation of his "Big Slide Show" which features illustration and commentary from eight of his books. Following the film screenings he will appear for q & a at all shows The evening will end with a signing of his books Rat Catching, Oak Mot, and What It Is, And How It Is Done. Special Ticket price: Cinematheque Members $12; Students $15; General Admission $20.

July 11: Screening of BRASIL IN TIME – presented in association with Mochilla, ArtDontSleep & Dublab

"…it is brilliant as a combination of images and music, a film that does visually what its narrative proclaims through words and scenes." -- George Lipsitz: Head of the Dept of Black Studies UCSB and author of Dangerous Crossroads

"…What makes the film so filmic are all the strange little asides, strange little nothings that capture exactly what it is like to see some cats who have done some really important wilded out music come together and do the same thing together…." -- Alex Wagner The Fader Magazine

Brasilintime is a map that connects the world of Rio de Janeiro of the late teens to the South Bronx of the early seventies. The roads from Samba through Bossa Nova to hip-hop are a complex web of musical whispers and echoes. Brasilintime is a two hour documentary that traverses this journey. In 2000 some of Los Angeles's most revered soul and jazz session drummers came together with some of the city's greatest turntablists. The magic that happened during this first meeting is both homage and discovery. It was filmed and became the acclaimed short "Keepintime: Talking Drums and Whispering Vinyl." In November of 2002, both drummers and DJs travelled to Sao Paulo Brazil. The purpose of the journey was to expand the multi-generational conversation to include their counterparts from the world of Samba, Bossa Nova and Samba Rock, as well as the best new talent from Brasilian hip hop. This show was recorded and became the basis for Brasilintime: Batucada com Discos. Shot in a direct and often experimental way, relying frequently on the use of still photography, Brasilintime speaks the language of the music it addresses. Starring Paul Humphrey, James Gadson Derf Reklaw, Babu, Jrocc, Cut Chemist, Madlib and from Brasil Wilson Das Neves, Ivan Mamao Conti, Joao Parahyba and DJ Nuts. Discussion with Director, cast and crew after the screening.

Music will follow the screening in the courtyard. Very special guests TBA. www.brasilintime.com

HISTORY OF THE EGYPTIAN:

The Egyptian Theatre is newly renovated by the American Cinematheque. It is a state-of-the-art movie theatre housed within Sid Grauman's first grand movie palace on Hollywood Boulevard. The exotic courtyard is fully restored to its 1922 grandeur. The historic Egyptian was the home of the very first Hollywood movie premiere (ROBIN HOOD in 1922 starring Douglas Fairbanks) and was known as the theatre "where the stars see the movies." Vintage and current photos are available upon request as well as complete press kits.

THE AMERICAN CINEMATHEQUE NOW HAS A SANTA MONICA BRANCH - THE AERO THEATRE:

The Aero Theatre and its adjoining retail spaces, built in the style of French Norman architecture, by Donald W. Douglas of Douglas Aircraft fame, opened for business on January 10, 1940. The theatre, designed by architect R.M. Woolpert, operated with a small staff, seven nights per week. Aero programming consisted of double features (that changed three times weekly), Kiddie Matinees and drawings for sets of depression glass dishes prior to the Saturday night show. People walked to the Aero 65 years ago, just as they do today. The theatre remained in the Douglas family for quite some time. Jim Rosenfield, President of J.S. Rosenfield & Co, Inc., a Montana Avenue based retail real estate company specializing in renovating unique retail properties, purchased the Aero Theatre with his Chicago-based partner John Bucksbaum, from Sandy Allen in 1997, and they remain the current owners.
