“Ade spins out dozens of luminous, shimmering ideas that speak to the way most of us live, and might even challenge us to rethink how we see our parents and our children.”

- Stephanie Zacharek, Time

2016, Germany, Sony Pictures Classics, 162 min. Dir. Maren Ade.

Both Cahiers du Cinéma and Sight & Sound named this thoughtful comedy the best film of the year. Fond of practical jokes, Winfried (Peter Simonischek) hopes to loosen up his career-centric daughter Ines (Sandra Hüller) by visiting her in the guise of a business consultant named Toni Erdmann.

Tuesday, January 3 - 7:30 PM - Aero Theatre

“A stunningly inventive take on the function rather than the life of a writer … a work of such cleverness and beauty, alongside such power, that it’s hard to know how to parcel out praise.”

- Jay Weissberg, Variety

2016, Chile, The Orchard, 107 min. Dir. Pablo Larraín.

Although he was Chile’s greatest poet, Pablo Neruda (Luis Gnecco) was forced into hiding during the government’s anti-communist crackdown in 1948; this distinctive biographical drama sees the future Nobel laureate’s life through the eyes of a police inspector (Gael García Bernal, terrific here) trying to track him down.

In Spanish and French with English subtitles.

Introduction by Director Pablo Larrain!

“A masterpiece of suave perversity, the movie leads its audience through a meticulously constructed maze of ambiguity, scrambling our assumptions and expectations at every turn”

- A. O. Scott, The New York Times

2016, France, Sony Pictures Classics, 130 min. Dir. Paul Verhoeven.

Director Paul Verhoeven and star Isabelle Huppert both reach career peaks with this complex psychological thriller. Huppert stars as a successful video game executive who is raped in her home; rather than go to the police, she identifies her masked attacker and engages him in a twisted cat-and-mouse game.
