Wednesday, February 20 7:00 PM A Night At The Egyptian With French Filmmakers Jean-Marc Barr and Pascal Arnold and Actress Elodie Bouchez!! Known as an actor primarily for his roles in Luc Bessons THE BIG BLUE (1988) and Lars von Triers EUROPA (1991), Jean-Marc Barr made his directorial debut, LOVERS, with co-writer and co-director Pascal Arnold, inspired by the technological freedom of the digital era and the rules of Dogma 95. Following the technological innovations resulting in the democratisation of the cinema, Barr and Arnold have clearly positioned themselves as a part of a new "New Wave" with references to the famous "Nouvelle Vague" of the 1950s and 60s. Shot on digital video and transferred to film, their "free trilogy" of Dogma-inspired films includes LOVERS, TOO MUCH FLESH and BEING LIGHT. The Cinematheque is presenting the first two films for the first time in Los Angeles, both starring acclaimed actress Elodie Bouchez (THE DREAMLIFE OF ANGELS, WILD REEDS).
LOVERS - Dogma #5, 1999, TF1 International, 100 min. Dir. Jean-Marc Barr. Set in Paris and shot in English, the first non-Danish DOGMA film stars Elodie Bouchez as Jeanne, the radiant bookstore saleswoman who falls in love with Yugoslav painter Dragan (Sergei Trifunovic). But Dragans illegal immigrant status soon threatens to tear the lovers apart. With a sharp and glossy digital video to 35 mm. blow-up, LOVERS is a fresh and sensitive ode to the eternal freedom of love. TOO MUCH FLESH, 2000, TF1 International, 109 min. Dirs. Jean-Marc Barr and Pascal Arnold. TOO MUCH FLESH, the digital video follow-up to LOVERS, explores the freedom of sexuality and pleasure in a small puritanical community in the Illinois corn-belt. Lyle (Jean- Marc Barr), living with Amy (Rosanna Arquette) in an arranged marriage, suddenly discovers his sexuality with a passing stranger (Elodie Bouchez) and runs afoul of community morals. Discussion following the films with directors Jean-Marc Barr, Pascal Arnold and actress Elodie Bouchez.
