Born in Santa Monica on July 14, 1910, actress Gloria Stuart remains one of the most glamorous blondes of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Discovered at the Pasadena Playhouse, she was contracted to Universal where she became one of director James Whale’s favorite actresses, working together on THE OLD DARK HOUSE, THE KISS BEFORE THE MIRROR and THE INVISIBLE MAN. Acclaimed for her work in gothic horror films, Stuart also brought understated elegance and sex appeal to musicals like Busby Berkeley’s ROMAN SCANDALS and THE GOLD DIGGERS OF 1935 and the Shirley Temple vehicle POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL. In the 1930’s Stuart helped to create the Screen Actors Guild, and with friend Dorothy Parker, she founded the League to Aid Spanish Orphans during the Spanish Civil war. After she retired from acting in the mid-1940’s, she taught herself to paint and debuted with a one woman show at the Manhattan Hammer Galleries in 1961. In the 1970’s, Gloria Stuart returned to acting, dancing with Peter O’Toole in a cameo role in MY FAVORITE YEAR. Following her husband’s death in 1978, she embarked on a third incarnation as an accomplished book artist and printer. With James Cameron’s TITANIC, Stuart delivered one of her finest performances as Rose Dawson Calvert, the 100 year old survivor of the sinking ship, and became the oldest performer to be nominated for an Oscar. We’re extremely pleased to welcome the delightful Gloria Stuart to the Lloyd E. Rigler Theatre at the Egyptian for this special tribute!
