Born in Santa Monica on July 14, 1910, actress Gloria Stuart remains one of the most glamorous blondes of Hollywoods Golden Age. Discovered at the Pasadena Playhouse, she was contracted to Universal where she became one of director James Whales favorite actresses, working together on THE OLD DARK HOUSE, THE KISS BEFORE THE MIRROR and THE INVISIBLE MAN. Acclaimed for her work in gothic horror films, Stuart also brought understated elegance and sex appeal to musicals like Busby Berkeleys ROMAN SCANDALS and THE GOLD DIGGERS OF 1935 and the Shirley Temple vehicle POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL. In the 1930s Stuart helped to create the Screen Actors Guild, and with friend Dorothy Parker, she founded the League to Aid Spanish Orphans during the Spanish Civil war. After she retired from acting in the mid-1940s, she taught herself to paint and debuted with a one woman show at the Manhattan Hammer Galleries in 1961. In the 1970s, Gloria Stuart returned to acting, dancing with Peter OToole in a cameo role in MY FAVORITE YEAR. Following her husbands death in 1978, she embarked on a third incarnation as an accomplished book artist and printer. With James Camerons TITANIC, Stuart delivered one of her finest performances as Rose Dawson Calvert, the 100 year old survivor of the sinking ship, and became the oldest performer to be nominated for an Oscar. Were extremely pleased to welcome the delightful Gloria Stuart to the Lloyd E. Rigler Theatre at the Egyptian for this special tribute!
Saturday, April 27 5:00 PM Actress Gloria Stuart In-Person! THE INVISIBLE MAN, 1933, Universal, 71 min. Director James Whale transformed H.G. Wells famous novel into one of the finest of the great Universal horrors, a flawless blending of state-of-the-art special effects, brilliant characterizations (courtesy of Claude Rains and Gloria Stuart) and black humor. Discussion following with actress Gloria Stuart.
Saturday, April 27 7:30 PM Double-Feature Gloria Stuart In-Person! GOLD DIGGERS OF 1935, 1935, Warner Bros., 95 min. Dir. Busby Berkeley. Following the success of GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933, Warners and director/choreographer/mad genius Busby Berkeley returned for this even more fabulous concoction starring Dick Powell, Adolphe Menjou and Gloria Stuart, and featuring some of the most jaw-droppingly lavish musical numbers ever conceived. If youre a fan of Baz Luhrmanns MOULIN ROUGE, then dont miss this surreal masterpiece of over-the-top choreography and art direction! THE OLD DARK HOUSE, 1932, Douris Corp., 71 min. One of the great, lost treasures of 1930s cinema, from the director of FRANKENSTEIN and THE INVISIBLE MAN, James Whale. Razor-sharp dialogue (based on J.B. Priestleys novel Benighted) and inspired lunacy from Boris Karloff and Ernest Thesiger highlight this Gothic tale of strangers Melvyn Douglas, Charles Laughton and Gloria Stuart trapped in a mansion with a murderous butler, an unseen pyromaniac and assorted other whackos. A connoisseurs delight. Actress Gloria Stuart to introduce screenings.
Sunday, April 28 5:00 PM Actress Gloria Stuart In-Person! TITANIC, 1997, Paramount, 194 min. With Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Gloria Stuart, Kathy Bates, Billy Zane. "I thought I wanted to be the next Jacques Cousteau", Director James Cameron once remarked here, he goes one better by resurrecting the doomed R.M.S. Titanic as a shimmering spectacle of polished brass and lost love. First the most expensive (and later the most successful) movie in Hollywood history, TITANIC was in reality a labor of love and craft for Cameron and crew from cinematographer Russell Carpenters luminous images to production designer Peter Lamonts meticulous reconstructions of the Titanic interiors. If youve seen TITANIC once, twice, three times come see it again! Discussion following with actress Gloria Stuart Check our website for updates on guest appearances. |
